We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal

People lived because she killed.
People died because he lived.

We Hunt The flame by Hafsah Faizal is the first book in the Sands of Arawiya series. The world has been deprived of magic and the forest of Arz is closing in each day, submerging the lands in darkness. War is on peak and the lives are in danger.

This Young Adult fantasy is represented by the Point of View of two protagonists – Zafira and Nasir. Zafira is a hunter, who goes to the dark forest of Arz to feed her people while Nasir is an assassin, a Prince of Death, who kills on the order from his father. Zafira is invited to go on a quest to retrieve an artifact to restore magic and Nasir is asked to go on the same quest but for a different reason altogether.

This story is passionately driven by characters. Every single character is strongly built with their individuality explored throughout the book. Zafira’s braveness, Deen’s loyalty, Nasir’s cloudy attitude, Altair’s humor, Benyamin’s patience, and Kifah’s dark-wit is all that made me drawn to the story. And also, all these characters were definitely high on sarcasm and just so you all know, my favorite character was Altair. I lived for his part in the story.

A monster. For a monster will always be enslaved to a master.

I also loved the picturesque and the graceful writing style and with the Arabian theme, myths and narrative, it made the whole story captivating. With every few chapters you will be left with questions, so so many questions about the characters, about the plot, about the magic, about the big bad, about the past and the future because this book has a plethora of secrets. The revelations made throughout the book will make your jaw dropped, the ending was unexpected and I can’t wait to read the second book.

Furthermore, since it’s a character-driven story, the book is slow-paced. It will take time to adjust yourself to the world surrounding them. I feel like this book was an introduction to everything and things were left out in open which could be a disadvantage to the story and can make reader zoned out. I usually love stories with great character development that’s why I was intrigued throughout but I have to say that only if it were a little fast-paced, it would have turned out unputdownable.

Rating – 4 out of 5 stars

My Verdict – I really enjoyed reading the book but it will take patience to set yourself.
